Based on the English sport of roving archery, originally developed to give archers a way to practice bowhunting, with small targets placed in natural surroundings. The Field Round became as much a game as it is hunting practice. During the outdoor season, CAA archers shoot a Field Round on a course set-up through the woods using 28 targets that vary in size and distance from the archer. The size of the target depends upon the distance, the longer the distance the larger the target. Target diameters vary from 20 centimeters to 65 centimeters. Distances vary from 20 feet to 80 yards. Four arrows are shot at each target. For 22 of the targets, four arrows are shot from the same distance, the remaining 6 targets are walk-ups where the distance varies with each arrow.

Distances are measured and known, marked by white stakes (for adults) at shooting positions. Targets are in no special order and may be arranged as best suits the terrain at each range. Young adults stakes are marked with white, as is adults, youth stakes are marked blue and cubs stakes are marked with black.

NFAA targets, which are used by CAA affiliated clubs, have a black center spot (5 points), an inner white ring (4 points), and an outer black ring (3 points).

Cubs ages under 12 years, Youth ages 12-14, Young Adult ages 15-17. The maximum possible score for the each target is 20 points. The perfect score is 560 points. Any NFAA/CAA member is entitled to purchase a "20" pin when obtaining a perfect target score. Adult distances are mentioned, but shorter distances are provided for young adult (15-17), youth (12-14) and the cub (11 and under).
